  • Iodine-Stabilized He-Ne Laser "Model 100" reimported after laser repair

Winters' Iodine-Stabilized He-Ne Laser "Model 100" is used at the Technical Research Institute, Japan Society for the Promotion of Machine Industry as the length Standard unit together with Firm NEOARK Corporarion's Iodine-Stabilized He-Ne Laser for the calibration of laser units from Japanese companies. In Japan we had known that the Micro-g LaCoste Absolute Gravimeter combined Winters Model 100 Laser unit and several government offices used this absolute gravimeter. However a famous big corporation uses several sets of Winters Model 100 itself for the calbration of his products. There was very little leak in the laser tube this time and his unit was unstable. We obtained the Reimport Permission of that Laser unit and sent it back to Firm Winters to repair in Longmont near Denver, Colorado, and in this area there are Laser Laboratory of NIST. After repair works we reimported and reinstalled it at the laboratory of the big corporation, the Model 100 runs very good now.

    Gage Head Testing Machine

Firm Q.P.T. Innovation Technik Handels GmbH, Germany announced the Universal Testing Machine for calibarating dial gauges, gauging heads and so on.
The Dial Gauge Tester "TKU 40" of Firm Q.P.T. is as follows. A traditional Testing Machine can check the electronic length gauging head always with the indicating unit, but the "TKU 40" has the combination an inductive and incremental Reference systems and so a length gauging head itself can be checked. It checks fully automatically inductive and incremental length gauging heads of the Firms Tesa, Mahr, Heidenhain etc. The testing time for an inductive length gauging head with a measuring range of ± 1mm requires under 30 seconds ! The test is done by the analog system. It checks also digitals dial gauges with Mitutoyo-electronics, Sylvac, Mahr etc. and then checks semi-automatically Microcators, dial comparator, test indicator, measuring unit without data output etc.

    Universal Tester for Heads Advantages
    1. The combination an inductive and incremental reference systems
    2. The both reference systems start at each measuring cycle always from the absolute mechanical and electronic system Zero. That means, existing system error can be compensated mathematically.
    3. An inductive length gauging head will be checked completely about linearity error.
    4. The testing time for an inductive length gauging head with analog output is very quick.

    Mechanics
    Measuring range : 0 - 50 mm
    Measuring speed : 2 mm/s
Reference system : LIP401/inductive measuring system
    Resolution : 0.01 µm
    Absolute system accuracy : maximum 0.2 µm/50mm range at a temperature of 20ºC ± 0.5K

Standards for Optical Surface Measuring Instruments 2080

Master 2080 There is a tendency for a roughness measurements by optical surface measuring instruments as interference microscopes with automatic image processor. This is because the optical and non-contact measurements are very quick. Then almost instruments are calculating the roughness parameters based on ISO and/or JIS, however it is not clear that the evaluation is the same as the Standards. Becasue the existing Standards for the roughness are intended for the stylus instruments not for the optical surface mesuring instruments. The comparison between the stylus and opticla instruments gives many results but they don't satisfy. For example, a horizontal resolution measured by interference microscopes is too short and this instrument cannot get the tracing length as long as the Standards. This announced standard 2080 is the one for the depth which is groove-grinded on the flat surface. The features are:
    1) The program routine of optical instruments is on the assumption that the measuring surface is flat, and 2080 is made to flat.
    2) The groove has oblique wall which gives the clear results for interference measurements.
    3) The reflectivity of the measuring surface is high which gives better S/N for optical instruments.
    4) There are 6 grooves.
     0.24, 0.75, 2.4, 7.5, 24, 75µm

About the detail of the standard 2080 is refered to the following PDF-file in Japanese.

Measurements Standards for the Calibration of the Stylus Prtofile Instruments

Firm Halle-Präzisions-Kalibriernormale GmbH, Germany manufactures measurement standards for contact stylus roughness testers and can deliver it with PTB Certificate. The traceability is required in production line for ISO 9000 series. The Halle's standards are used for calibration of roughness testers in production lines too. In Japan recently many Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) for roughness measurement are revised according to the standardization of ISO. The Halle's standards are conformed to JIS B0659-1:2002 (ISO 5436-1:2000) "GPS-Surface Texture: Profile Method; Measurement standards-Part 1". Firm Halle manufactures Type A2, Type D1 and Type D2 in conformity to JIS (ISO).

Depth Measurement Standard 2060 and Roughness Measurement Standard 4058

    Master 2060

Master 4058 Under the ISO 9000 series which are Standards for Quality assurance and Quality control the traceability during the manufacturing process is requested and the roughness measurements are the same. The Depth Measurement Standard 2060 (above sketch) and Roughness Measurement Standard 4058 (right sketch) are the same as JIS B 0659-1 or ISO 5436-1 or the Standard of PTB, German National Laboratory.
This depth measurement standard 2060 is calibrated according to SI unit and the stylus movement of Stylus instruments are traceable to SI Units. This Standard 2060 is Type A2 of the Standard and 40 x 20 x 10 mm made by glass and the calibrated depths are located in the center area. The Standard has 2 kinds, 6 grooves and 3 grooves as the left and center drawings. The 6 grooves is Type No.2060/01/6/Pk and they are 0.25/0.6/1/3/6/9 µm. The right interference fringe shows 3µm depth. The 3 grooves is Type No.2060/01/3/Pk and they are 1/4/9 µm. This time Type No.2060/01/1/Pk for 1 groove is newly on sale.
The right drawing is the Roughness Measurement Standard 4058, Type D1 of the Standard, for calibrating the roughness parameters with the size of 40 x 20 x 11.3 mm made by hardned Stainless steel. The measured surface has an area of 17 x 5 mm and an irregular profiles repeated in 2-4mm length. The irregular grinding profiles can check the waviness and the effect of the stylus radius comparing standards whose profiles are sine waves profiles or pyramidal wave profiles. The certificate shows the using Gauss filter and 3 roughness parameters as Ra, Rz and Rmax. Ra with about 0.2µm is Type No.4058/01A1/Pk, Ra with about 0.5µm is Type No.4058/01A2/Pk and Ra with about 1.5µm is Type No.4058/01A3/Pk.

    Superfine Roughness Measurement Standards 2070

The importance of quality control is increasingly required because of the recent demand for nano-technology. The quality management of fine surface is difficult but a must. If the stylus radius is changed about 1µm, then the result has big difference in the Nano-world. Firm Halle manufactures the standards whose values are Ra for 20 to 100nm and Rz for 100 to 500nm and delivers with PTB Certificate.
The superfine roughness standard is made on nickel coated surface of Ø 50mm x Thickness 10mm, and is turned on the 4mm width from 26 to 34mm in diameter and has an irregular profile with 1.25mm periodic length as the left drawing. The Circle of 7mm diameter including 4mm profile length is cut and is made the measurement standard as right drawing. The Standrad is Type D2 of the Standrad and there are 3 standards for Ra with 25nm...Type No.2070/03A1/Pk, 50nm...Type No.2070/03A2/Pk and 80nm...Type No.2070/03A3/Pk. The PTB Certificate is attached.
